Swing Smiles

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Narrative Friday : Planet Discovery

My planet is called Nishaho. Nishaho is in the middle of the Milky Way. There were a lot of world wars on this planet. Thankfully, they are at peace now. There are also a lot of bad gases on this planet so you must wear a special mask. It is made out of water, gases, and trees. If you like to swim, climb trees, and the smell of gas, then this is the planet for you!

Note: With summer break upon us, HS works on 3rd grade school prep. every morning. After chatting with him this morning, we thought it would be fun to post each Friday his favorite journal entry. So, look forward to Narrative Fridays!

Last Bell

Farewell 2nd Grade! HS has finished another year of school. It is amazing how quickly this year flew. Wasn't it yesterday that I decorated his bathroom mirror with positive thoughts for a productive and fun 1st day of school? Didn't he just enjoy his 1st day of school breakfast surrounded by a diningroom covered by a gazillion little cheers that I wrote to inspire a smile, a giggle, and relax the 1st day jitters?

I guess it's official. The last bell has sounded at HFCA. The last morning assembly of the year took place bright and early. Prayers were said, seventh graders waved palm branches sprinkled with holy water over each class (helping to symbolize that they were now the leaders of the school since the 8th graders had graduated), tears were shed by those leaving to move on to other places, and teachers and students were touched by the inspiration that grew from working along side of one another as they walked down the path of learning.

Reflecting on this year, I'd say it was a success. We needed this year to be phenomenal. We needed this year's teacher to inspire, lead, and watch the sparks of imagination take wing in HS. For all of my hopes and desires as I sent him off on that first day of 2nd grade, I'm left today on the last day of his 2nd grade, grateful. Honored. Proud.

Welcome to your summer, HS! You deserve it!

Thank You

How do you express thanks? Chocolates delicately wrapped in foil, flowers with fragrant smells filling the air, or a gift certificate wrapped with a little red bow? End of the school year sends parents on a mass mission on finding that perfect trinket or item to show their gratitude.

HS wanted this year to simply write his thanks on paper. I don't know about you, but sometimes, the words mean more than the nicely wrapped package...

He wrote a letter for each of his teachers and created a little scrapbook page. Mrs. Patiak recieved the ones with red stars because he said, "she shines, mommy!" and his aid, "well...I think she'll like this because she said she likes Western stuff."

Later during the week, he came home with a letter to write to his 1st grade teacher who was retiring after more than 25 years of teaching. "I'm not sure what to say. I mean, she's taught a really long time!" In the end, he wrote from the heart of an 8 year old...

Dear Mrs. Brown,

My favorite part of first grade was having the insects in the classroom. I also liked drawing plar bears, the zoon field trip, and making snowflakes! You were a great 1st grade teacher! I hop you enjoy your retirement.

Love,
HS

How do you express thanks? Special letters written from the heart are sometimes the greatest treasures of all.

New Wheels

If it's possible, I think LD is above cloud nine today. After wandering the garden section of Walmart for a Cub Scout project, we decided to check out the outdoor toys for the kids. As we rounded the corner for the bikes, it was as if a strobe light was pulsating in time to the beat of LD's heart.

"Mo-mmmm-yyyy...scoooter!" she cried out in jubilation. A millisecond passed before she tapped my hand and then reached up to my face and said again with ownership, "Mommy...my scooter!" I glanced in the direction of her chubby pointer finger. There it was. A lovely princess pink Radio Flyer scooter complete with flower power 1960s print on the foot pedal. LD was right. It was indeed a scooter fit for her.

After getting through lunch and a nap, LD was ready to try at her new wheels. She couldn't wait to try out her scooter. She practiced inside first. Then, she ehaded out into the yard to show-off for her big brother. However, as you might expect, she grew a little weary of not being able to go very far in the grass. Then, it was taking her new wheels to a whole new level: outside the safety zone of the house. I giggled as I watched her try to move the scooter. She looks as though a big bee has sat on top of her head as she tries to kick her chunky leg up to propel herself forward. Distracted by her shadow, she would pose with the leg up and then say, "Look! I'm moving! I LOVE my scooter!"

As you can see from the look on her face, heaven is behind those bright blue eyes. She's a "big" girl now...she can scoot and try to keep up with her big bro. Only problem...she has to learn how to turn first!

Music Man

Has it really been almost a year that HS sat down in front of the piano for his 1st lesson? According to the pamphlet I held in my hand today, it has. Time flies when you are listening to music of a budding pianist. HS's spring recital was another fantastic opportunity for all of the piano students to reap the rewards of hard work and dedication. I look forward to the piano recitals...held in a historic home in downtown Honolulu, the students all get a chance to shine as they play on a grand piano, turning even the simplest of songs into Beethoven.

HS played two songs, "Wheels Going Round" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee". He played with gusto and even though the nerves were obviously kicking in before he sat down at the grand, he nailed both songs. Once finished, he stood up, looked over and the pride that he was able to play both from memory flowed forth from the sigh of relief as he bowed.

With only a few more classes left before a short break, HS continues to enjoy being the music man and bringing a little bit of music into our evenings. As he says, just wait...he moves up a book level in July!

Once Upon a time...

a girl and a boy met on the President's lawn during a college mixer.

The two became friends.

One asked repeatedly to date while the other failed to realize a love beyond a friendship.

One waited patiently while the other found the way to go beyond friendship.

An unexpected phone call. A courtship. An unforgettable dance. An engagement. Laughter. Graduation.

A beautiful wedding.

Adventures as a couple and celebrating the births of a handsome boy and a beautiful daughter. Tearful deployment kisses. Joyful reunions.

Once upon a time,

5, 113 days,

730 weeks and 3 days,

122, 640 hours ago...

I married the man of my dreams.

Happy 14th
Anniversary, darlin'!

Haiku Time

Upon picking up HS from school of Friday, I was greeted with a smiling 2nd grader wildly waving a paper in front of him. "Look what I wrote in computer class!" he exclaimed as he dove into his seat and tossed the paper into my hand. In my hand was a nice Haiku. Written all about Cody and since it was one of HS's first times freely choosing to write a poem, I thought it was worthy of sharing.

My Dog

My dog is called Cody.
He is still being potty trained.
Does he know down?

OK...so I can surmise two things from this:
1. HS has heard me say a zillion times "Cody, outside? Go potty?"
2. HS really wants Cody to learn "down" since one of Cody's favorite people in the house happens to be HS and his favorite way of showing that is by jumping up at HS.

All will come in time. Poetry and HS...I really hope that happens again!

Clan Augmentation

After nearly 14 years of debating when the perfect time to add a canine child to our clan would be, we tossed aside debate and stepped into action. Sunday, after an emotional rollercoaster morning, we welcomed home a 9 pound bundle of 7 week-old Australian Shepherd joy: Cody. Yes, indeed, I have a Western dog now...I can see the open skies and prairie lands racing towards infinity. The Rockies, reaching so high as though they just might touch the sky and in Big Sky country, they do. Cody will surely live up to his namesake as we welcome him in a warm embrace into our clan. Our dynamics and way of doing things will change, but we're up for the challenge...all five of us.

It will be a challenge we're sure with two children's schedules, one very spoiled and cool cat, the demands of our nomadic military lifestyle, and now an adorable pup, but as a kid you always imagine yourself directing the world's best circus...why not live the one you're co-ring leader? I can just hear myself now as I wear a bright red dress and stunning hat..."step right in folks! Welcome to the many different acts and talents of our clan...they are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat...as watch as now puppy learns the way of the clan!"

Welcome to the Family

Receiving

When you have received Him, stir up your heart to do Him homage; speak to Him about your spiritual life, gazing upon Him in your soul where He is present for your happiness; welcome Him as warmly as possible, and behave outwardly in such a way that your actions may give proof to all of His Presence. ~ St. Francis deSales

Today was a huge day for HS. We have witnessed and helped him grow in his Faith over the last year as he progressed towards this day. Today we watched as he stood before our Heavenly Father and received the most precious gift He gave to each of us, His body and blood.

It is so hard to write this blog. On many levels I am emotional about this milestone in HS's faith. It is moments like this that I wish there was a magical transporter. Family have missed two big advancements for HS so I was a basket of tears, frustration, and joy as the day approached. Lucky for me, HS always helps put me at ease over that frustration with big hugs and smiles. It is his smile that relaxed me as I walked him into the classroom to get him ready for the mass.

The classroom was a bustle of activity. Girls dressed in beautiful white dresses and the smell of the flower leis on their heads filled the room as only the delicate white Hawaiian flowers can. The boys all looked so handsome and gave me a glimpse into what they would look like as adults. They glanced around the room giggling and chatting as the principal and second grade teachers took pride in greeting each of the children with a hug or an encouraging smile. Then, I watched with tears as a long Ti leaf lay was placed gently around his neck by Mrs. P. and Mrs. M, his principal, tied on the regal red sash. He turned to me and said, "Mom...look! I'm ready, now!" He was awfully tentative in getting settled into waiting for mass, so I stayed with him until he gave me the "nod" of Ok...I'm fine...go.

HH couldn't have selected a better pew. Without knowing where HS would end up sitting, we were lucky enough to be seated kitty corner from him. He processed down the aisle, bowed, and gave us that huge HS smile as he entered his pew. I cried...for what would be one of a billion by the time the mass was ended. I couldn't believe how personal this mass was. The children literally glowed with pride. Smiles and nerves blended together as we moved closer to their big moment with Father Sebastian.

It was as though time stood still when I saw HS bow before Father Sebastian and open his mouth to receive the body and blood. He came back into his pew, turned to us, and mouthed the words, "that was good!" to us and then went back to his focused state. Each child was a little different...there were funny faces, grimaces as they tasted wine for the 1st time, nervous twitches as they patiently took turns to approach the Father. Each of them glowed a little brighter as they came back from receiving.

Without a doubt, the 30 kids who took Communion today at Holy Family Catholic Church are now warmed with the spirit of God. They have been touched by Him and welcomed into His family. HH and I will cherish today for the remainder of our lives. We have been given such a phenomenal gift by God and we will never tire of watching as our children grow closer to God's love and grace. I will leave this post with the words from the song the Communion class sung to us as they stood in front of the altar. They left not a dry eye as they lifted their voices up to God.

Welcome to the Family
We're glad that you have come
to share your life with us
as we grow in love and
may we always be to you
what God would have us be;
a family always there
to be strong and to lean on.

May we learn to love each other
more with each new day.
May words of love be on our lips
in everything we say.
May the Spirit melt our hearts
and teach us how to pray
that we might be...
a true family.
