The cuteness overload with socks in Japan makes LD's heart sing on just about a daily basis.
Today she chose a pair that literally made my heart sing as she paraded downstairs wearing the adorable five-toed socks I bought her at the New Sanno (they have an excellent gift shop...don't forget to stop in and take a look when you are there).
Socks are really interesting here.
Yes, all the styles available here are a great way to step away from the boring humdrum of solid color socks. Choosing the right pair of socks to purchase truly becomes a way to express yourself. However, deep down away from self expression is the real reason socks are cool here. Culturally, they are practical and extremely necessary. In a land that takes off shoes more times a day than what we are used to, you don't want to be caught with a bad pair of socks (holy socks must be tossed, not worn.) Much better to slip your feet out of your shoes and be sporting super cool socks as you leave your shoes at the genkan.
The fact that they just may make you smile even more...
